You decide to bite the proverbial bullet and book your Business or First class ticket at the premium award lever… generally twice the miles required for a standard award ticket. Are the extra miles you use lost forever?

Even though you have booked at the “outrageous” level, keep checking for the lower level award to reappear. Remembering that airlines want to sell seats before they give them away, check your travel dates repeatedly and also check seat availability in the front of the plane.

If you come to within a week of departure and there are still 25% of the seats unsold in First/Business, there is a good chance they will be offered as standard awards. If and when this does happens, call the airline and have them immediately rebook you at the lower level.

There will be a fee for this and probably a redeposit fee based on your elite status with the airline but certainly these fees will be far less than the value of your miles.

Georgetown From / To A Colonial Journey: Car Rental Options in Georgetown But should you wish (or need) to rent a car in Georgetown, there are some options available. The easiest way to rent a car is when you arrive at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, which is about 25 miles south of Georgetown. Most of the major car rental agencies have booths or kiosks at the airport, although reservations can also be made through your hotel or with an established tour operator. International chain Budget has an office in Liliendaal, Georgetown. Should your trip coincide with a local holiday, it is best that you book a car before your arrival. Tourists should have an international license to drive in Guyana. Visitors can also obtain a local driving permit from the Licence and Revenue Office in Georgetown. This driving permit is valid for one month. Traffic stays on the left side of the road in Guyana. Remember to drive carefully as local residents tend to drive aggressively and make sudden stops along the road without signaling. Also avoid driving at night as many streets are not properly lit. Speed limits in and around the city were recently updated so be sure that you follow the road signs. Seat belts should be used at all times as failure to do so can result in a fine.

Kona From / To Rent a Car in Kona - It's Easier and Cheaper than you Think! Even though many visitors to Hawaii want to go surfing or sailing, cars don't necessarily come equipped to carry your gear, so it's best to book in advance if you want a roof rack or if you have other special considerations. As the Big Island is really quite small, you can drive pretty much anywhere on it. However you should watch out for the strong winds and storms that sometimes hit the island and cause delays. Because of concerns about protecting the islands' fragile habitats, no off-road driving is permitted anywhere in Hawaii, even though four wheel drive vehicles are available for hire. If you are driving at night, remember that you are in a wild place and watch out for the black pigs which often wander across the roads after dark. There is minimal street lighting so you will need to exercise common sense, but if you're careful you'll find that driving in the Kona area is a beautiful experience.

Malta From / To Hire a Car to Make the Most of Malta You can use your own driving license when you rent a car in Malta. It's also advisable to have your passport and a credit card with you when you collect your vehicle. You'll need to be over twenty one years of age and under seventy, and to have held your license for at least two years. The Maltese drive on the left hand side of the road and the speed limit in the cities is usually 25mph, rising to 40mph on the open road. However, since the islands are not very big, you'll still find getting around them quick and easy. In Valletta and some of Malta's small towns the streets tend to be narrow and twisty, so drive carefully and be wary of doors opening straight onto the road. Local drivers tend to be relaxed and friendly and congestion rarely gets serious so most visitors find Malta a relaxed, easy-going place to drive.

Tehran From / To Flying to Mehrabad Airport – gateway to all of Iran Tehran is the country’s aviation hub and there are flights from Tehran to just about every provincial capital in the country. Almost all of these flights leave from Mehrabad Airport. The airport has adequate facilities and six terminals but not all are any longer in use. Terminal 1 was closed after the opening of the newer and bigger Imam Khomeini International airport. Almost all international flights to Tehran now use the new airport. However, much of Iran’s extensive domestic flight network and a handful of flights to Middle Eastern destinations still fly in and out of the more conveniently located Mehrabad Airport. Terminal 2 serves mostly domestic traffic, plus some cargo flights. Terminal 3 is used by the Air Force, Terminal 4 handles exclusively domestic flights and Terminal 5 is the Hajj Terminal. Terminal 6 is used by the Iranian government. The easiest way to get from the airport into Tehran is by taxi. Taxis are not expensive and plentiful. A taxi booth is located in the Arrivals Hall which can help visitors organize a car. There is no rail nor bus link from the city to the airport, however there is a bus link from Mehrabad to Imam Khomeini Airport. Visitors to Iran should note that they will not be allowed entry if they have an Israeli stamp in their passport. Also, despite what some guides will tell you, there is no departure fee for travelers leaving Iran by air.

Oklahoma City From / To Will Rogers World Airport: Oklahoma City, OK! Originally a base for a great deal of air force activity during World War II, Will Rogers World Airport turned its focus to providing transportation for civilians in the 1950s, with a number of different renovations undertaken ten years later to modernize the airport and bring the facilities up to date. With expanded terminals, the planned construction of a new concourse, and a number of new cafes around the airport, there's a definite move towards a more contemporary vibe at the airport. Business travelers will delight at the amount of available Wi-Fi around the airport, too. A number of airlines fly out of Will Rogers World Airport, including United Express, Frontier Airlines, Northwest, Southwest, Delta and Delta Connection, and American Airlines. Just a few miles outside of downtown Oklahoma City, getting from the airport to the downtown area is made easy by the number of different options passengers have for travel. Many hotels offer shuttle service, and taxis and shuttles are also easy to reserve outside of the baggage claim area. The Metro route 11 provides public transportation options for travelers to reach the city, too.

Nairobi From / To Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi: Visiting Kenya Named after Kenya's first prime minister, Jomo Kenyatta International has been open since the 1950s. The airport is located in Embakasi, one of the many Nairobi suburbs, and is merely a 15 kilometer drive from the hustle and the bustle of the business district. The airport consists of a single terminal divided into three separate parts, labeled Units 1, 2 and 3. Unit 3 is primarily reserved for domestic flights, while 1 and 2 are the focus of most of the international arrivals and departures. All flights to Nairobi arrive at either Units 1 or 2. A number of international carriers offer flights to Jomo Kenyatta International.
